Insist on a written specification

A proper quotation lists the exact model numbers and capacities, indoor unit positions, outdoor unit position, pipe routes and lengths, electrical works, making good, commissioning, warranty terms and VAT treatment.

If a quote is one line and a price, you cannot compare it with anything, and you have no protection when scope is disputed later.

Red flags

Prices quoted over the phone without seeing the property. Pressure to decide today. Large cash deposits. No mention of pressure testing or vacuum. Vague warranty language. No named engineer or address.

Also be wary of a quote that is 20% below every other one — check whether it is VAT treatment, cheaper equipment or work that has been left out.

Warranty and aftercare

Manufacturer warranties commonly run five to seven years when the equipment is installed by an approved installer, registered on time and serviced annually. Ask who registers it and who you call if something fails.

Aftercare is where local matters most. A firm forty miles away will not be there quickly in August.
