Bedroom Air Conditioning for Better Sleep

Bedrooms are the most common reason people finally install air conditioning. Getting them right is mostly about noise and sizing.

The temperature that actually helps

Sleep research consistently points to a bedroom somewhere around 16–19°C, with humidity under control. In a British heatwave a first-floor bedroom can sit at 27–28°C all night, which is why sleep collapses.

You do not need arctic cooling. Bringing a room from 28°C to 21°C, with the humidity dropped, transforms how it feels.

Noise is the deciding factor

A bedroom unit needs to be quiet at low fan, because that is where it will spend the night. Look for published sound pressure figures in the low twenties dB(A) and use the unit's night or quiet mode.

Position matters too: avoid blowing directly onto the bed, and keep the outdoor unit away from bedroom windows — including next door's.

  • Low-fan sound pressure around 19–23 dB(A)
  • Night mode with automatic set-point drift
  • Airflow directed along the ceiling, not at the bed
  • Outdoor unit away from any bedroom window

Do not oversize a bedroom

An oversized unit in a small bedroom cools fast, stops, and cycles — which means noise changes constantly and humidity is barely touched. A correctly sized unit runs gently and steadily, which is exactly what you want overnight.

Most standard double bedrooms are served well by a 2.0–2.5kW unit; large rooms with big south-facing glazing may need more.

Winter use

The same unit heats. Bedrooms that are cold in winter — loft rooms, extensions over garages, rooms at the end of a radiator circuit — get a fast, controllable heat source without firing the whole house.

Because it is a heat pump, running it for an hour before bed is cheap.

Frequently asked questions

Will it dry my throat out overnight?
Not at sensible set points. Excessive cooling and airflow aimed straight at the bed are what cause that, and both are avoidable.
Can it run on a timer to shut off after I fall asleep?
Yes. Sleep timers and scheduled set-point drift are standard on the units we install.
